Parliament was suspended after five protesters burst into the Commons chamber while MPs debated whether to ban hunting with dogs.
Four of the men ran out from behind the speaker's chair - another wrestled past a doorkeeper from a different entrance.

Once the Commons resumed business, MPs voted, as expected, to back a ban on hunting with dogs by 339 to 155 votes.

It later emerged the intruders had probably been aided by a Commons passholder. Police are investigating.


'Carefully planned operation'

Commons Speaker Michael Martin told MPs: "Eight protesters were let into the House of Commons using a forged letter inviting them to a meeting in the Committee corridor.

"Once there, they were led into the small stairway to the north end of the corridor - probably by a passholder who was clearly exceeding his or her authority."

It was not clear whether the passholder who apparently helped the intruders was an MP, a reporter or an employee of a member, he said.

The intrusion was a "carefully planned operation" and the police are investigating, he added.

'Dry run'

Increased security measures and extra police officers would be in place for Thursday's parliamentary session, he said.

It has also emerged that one of those who burst into the Commons had contacted a BBC reporter before the protest to say they had staged a "dry run" on Tuesday.

It is understood campaigner Otis Ferry told the reporter how he and others planned to access the Commons but the information was not acted on by the BBC.

Mr Ferry, son of rock star Bryan Ferry, said the group planned to dress as builders and gain access using a letter purportedly from an MP.
The BBC said in a statement: "A BBC journalist was contacted by someone they had never met before.

"The information they received was passed into our newsgathering operation.

"The decision not to act on it further was taken at an operational level and in any respect no violence was threatened. Indeed the source made it clear no violence would be used.

"It was not clear to those handling the information that the demonstration would in fact definitely take place."

Security 'more obtrusive'

BBC political editor Andrew Marr said it was of concern that the protesters' dry run on Tuesday had not been spotted.

He said security forces faced a difficult task balancing public access with a greater threat from intruders.

He said: "I'm afraid what will happen now is there will be even tighter security.

"It will be even clunkier, it will be more obtrusive and ordinary members of the public who simply want to come to talk to their MPs, as they ought to be able to do in an open parliamentary democracy, will find it even harder."

The MPs' debate on the ban was suspended for 20 minutes after the unprecedented security breach.

'Deadly serious'

Outside Parliament, police estimate there were between 8,000 and 10,000 protesters but the organisers put it at 20,000.

The protest comes only two days after a Fathers 4 Justice campaigner got onto the balcony of Buckingham Palace.

MI5 is already reviewing security at Parliament after a protester in May threw a flour bomb at Tony Blair as he was speaking in the Commons chamber.

Wednesday's invasion of the chamber is a security breach which Commons leader Peter Hain said could have been "deadly serious".

It was shortly after 1620 BST that the protesters rushed in, with one shouting at Rural Affairs Minister Alun Michael: "This isn't democracy. You are overturning democracy."

The men were bundled out of the chamber, which is now being guarded by armed police, and later led away handcuffed by police.

As the sitting resumed, Labour MP Stuart Bell said such an invasion had not happened since the time of Charles I.

Inquiry call

Shadow home secretary David Davis condemned the protest and demanded an urgent security review and Labour MP Clare Ward suggested somebody must have given them access.

Derek Conway, Tory chairman of the Commons Administration and Works Committee, said the intruders would have needed a clear idea of the layout of the Commons to reach the Chamber.

A Countryside Alliance spokeswoman said some of those who went into the chamber were members, but they were acting as individuals.

"In fact, we condemn this demonstration, which was selfish and self indulgent and took away from the actions of 20,000 law abiding protesters."

But the move was applauded by protesters outside Parliament, with the rally's compere saying: "Well done, you have suspended business in there and that can only be good."

The demonstration in Parliament Square, organised by the alliance, broke up at about 1800 BST.

Van loads of police in riot gear were sent into the area to bolster the hundreds of officers already there, after scuffles in one corner of the square as police sought to keep demonstrators penned in.

Some bottles and fireworks were thrown and some protesters were filmed with bloodied heads after the clashes, but the protests were overwhelmingly peaceful.


Injuries

Scotland Yard says a small section of the crowd tried to break through the police cordon but it was "in the main... a peaceful demonstration".

Commander Rose Fitzpatrick said: "We had to deal quickly and effectively with that situation, in order to make sure the peaceful protest could carry on in safety, and to allow Parliament and London to go about its normal business with the minimum of disruption."

But some protesters accused the police of being heavy handed.

Some 11 people were arrested outside Parliament for various offences, including affray and using threatening words or behaviour.

It is understood 16 members of the public and one police officer have been injured, none of them serious.

Some critics say the two year delay before the ban would come into force is to avoid pro-hunt protests in the build-up to the election expected next spring.

The minister said the election gave opponents of a ban the chance to register their protest at the ballot box rather than on the streets.

No date has been given for a Lords debate, but this is expected to take place in October.

The government has said that it will force the ban into law using the rarely used Parliament Act even if the House of Lords once again votes against a ban.

Joan Dunayer: Speciesism, Ryce Rublishing, Fairborn Court (Maryland) 2004

Joan Dunayer hat Master-Abschlüsse in englischer Literatur, Erziehungswissenschaften und Psychologie an der Universität Princeton erworben. In ihrem früheren Buch, Animal Equality - Language and Liberation, beschäftigte sie sich mit den verschiedenen Facetten des Sprachspeziesismus. Dieser Aspekt kommt auch im vorliegenden Buch durch einige Vorbemerkungen zum Tragen.

Den drei Hauptkapiteln (Altspeziesismus, Neuspeziesismus und einem dritten Teil über Antispeziesismus, "Animal Equality" benannt) ist die Definition von Speziesismus vorgeschoben. Speziesismus ist nicht leicht zu definieren wie die fehlerhaften und unvollständigen Definitionen von Singer und Regan zeigen. Im Falle Singer ist sie selbst speziesistisch, was bei ihm nicht verwundert. Dunayers Definition lautet schließlich: Speziesimus ist "die Ablehnung (failure) in Einstellung (attitude) oder Praxis, nichtmenschlichen Lebewesen gleiche Berücksichtigung und Respekt zu gewährleisten". Zwar ist positiv, dass auch "Respekt" erwähnt wird (was die Antwort z.B. darauf ist, warum man auch natürlichen Todes gestorbene Tiere nicht essen soll), dennoch mutet das "Lebewesen (being)" missverständlich an, da unter Lebewesen bekanntermaßen auch Pflanzen zählen und hier sind die Unterstellungen von Forderungen nach Pflanzenrechten nicht mehr weit sind. Zudem fallen beim Begriff "nonhuman" Menschen heraus, weshalb diese Definition, die den Begriff "Spezies" zu vermeiden scheint, missverständlich ist.

Die drei Hauptkapitel sind in jeweils drei gleiche Unterkapitel geteilt, die parallelisiert werden. Sie befassen sich jeweils mit 1. Weltbild, 2. Gesetzgebung/Gesetzeslage und 3. Aktivismus der Bereiche Alt-, Neu- und Antispeziesismus.

Die erste Gruppe, die Altspeziesisten, sind Menschen, die jegliche ethische Berücksichtigung nichtmenschlicher Tiere ablehnen. Dunayer bespricht als primäre Merkmale dieser Position den Mangel an Empathie; die religiöse Vorstellung der Gottesebenbildlichkeit der Menschen; die Weigerung, nichtmenschliche Tiere als Individuen anzusehen; die Zuschreibung von besonderen Merkmalen oder Eigenschaften an Menschen, die nur Menschen besäßen (wie "Seele", Fähigkeit zum Vertragsschluss, ein "höherwertiges" Leben, eine größere Leidensfähigkeit, höhere Intelligenz und überlegene Moralität). Sie erläutert dabei die Fehlerhaftigkeit dieser Argumentationsmuster und das falsche Verständnis dieser Gruppe davon, was Tierrechte bedeuten. Sie unterlegt ihre Ausführungen mit kontrastierenden Studien, die die falschen Annahmen ins Reich der Mythen verweisen.

Der zweite Punkt, die Gesetzeslage, demaskiert die gegenwärtigen Tierschutzgesetze als durch und durch altspeziesistisch: Nichtmenschliche Tiere sind Eigentum ohne irgendwelche Rechtsansprüche. Alle Gesetze, die sich auf Tiere beziehen, schützen nicht die Tiere, sondern die menschlichen Interessen an ihnen. Ein Tier zu töten ist nur verboten, wenn damit das Eigentumsrecht (o.Ä.) eines anderes verletzt wird. Das zeigt sich auch in Artenschutzgesetzen, die eben Arten, keine Individuen schützen. Wenn die Populationen hingegen "zu groß" werden, darf und soll umgebracht werden. Gesetze gegen "Grausamkeit" richten sich nicht einmal nach der Grausamkeit, sondern nach den Bedingungen der Tierausbeutung. So werden in manchen dieser Gesetze Spezies, die für "Jagd, Fischerei und Tierhaltung" relevant sind, schlichtweg ausgelassen oder noch so brutale Methoden gelten nicht als "brutal" - Tierquälerei wird nur dort beschränkt, wo sie nicht Teil des normalen Betriebs der Tierausbeutungsindustrie ist. Das Tierschutzgesetz (in den USA wie hier) dient gleichermaßen dazu, Tierquälerei als legal und damit gerechtfertigt erscheinen zu lassen, statt sie zu verbieten. Das zeigt sich auch deutlich darin, was bei Tierversuchen praktisch alles erlaubt ist (das Injizieren toxischer Stoffe in empfindliche Organe gilt hier eben nicht als "Tierquälerei"). Auch der (amerikanische) "Humane Methods of Slaughter Act", der "humanes" Umbringen gewährleisten soll, bezieht sich nur auf Säugetiere. Fische, von denen eine wesentlich höhere Anzahl an Individuen ermordet wird, müssen überhaupt nicht betäubt werden. Ihr Fazit: "'Tier-Gesetze', die Ausbeutung und andere Formen des Missbrauchs billigen, sind Sklavengesetze, Instrumente speziesistischer Unterdrückung."

Im Kapitel zur "old-speciesist advocacy" zeigt sie, dass traditioneller Tierschutz im speziesistischem Eigeninteresse liegt und daher nie so weit geht, dass er Tiere über das Maß, was mit diesem Eigeninteresse vertretbar ist, schützen würde. So sollen Tierversuche eingedämmt, aber nicht verboten werden. Menschen dieser Prägung offenbaren sich auch dadurch, dass sie speziesistische Sprache benutzen und als "objektiv" verteidigen. Beispiele für altspeziesistischen Aktivismus sind Kampagnen für "humanes Schlachten", größere Käfige oder die Ausweitung von Tierschutzgesetzen. Solche Ziele signalisieren, dass Tierausbeutung in Ordnung sei, solange sie nur "tierschutzgerecht" durchgeführt wird. Diese Gesetze werden dann von den Tierausbeutern als Rechtfertigung für ihr Tun herangezogen. Es wird dabei auf einzelne Bereiche (wie das Schäbelkupieren oder die Kastration) fokussiert, nicht auf die Ausbeutung an sich, von der stattdessen abgelenkt wird. Nicht zu letzt fallen Altspeziesisten dadurch auf, dass sie manche Tierrechtsbegriffe vermeiden und von einer "rein pflanzlichen Ernährung" statt von "Veganismus" sprechen.

Neuspeziesismus wird im zweiten Teil behandelt. Angefangen mit dem neuspeziesistischen Weltbild stellt Dunayer heraus, dass solche Menschen, die Grundrechte auf nichtmenschliche Tiere ausweiten wollen, aber das nur auf bestimmte Spezies und zwar auf solche, die dem Menschen möglichst ähnlich sind. Als Vertreter stellt sie Peter Singer und seine Ideen von "ersetzbaren" Tieren vor (ein Tier zu töten (insofern es kein Menschenaffe ist) ist unproblematisch, wenn es durch ein anderes ersetzt wird). Sie zeigt dabei, wie Singers Positionen, nichtmenschliche Tiere hätten kein Zukunftsbewusstsein, weniger soziale Bindungen u. dgl., von der Ethologie längst widerlegt sowie inhärent speziesistisch sind. Die neuspeziesistische Annahme, Menschen wären aufgrund höherer Intelligenz zu bevorzugen, funktioniert nur, wenn man menschliche Intelligenz als Standard setzt, was – wiederum – speziesistisch ist. Nicht wenig solcher Argumentation beruht auf dergleichen Zirkelschlüssen. Neben Singer erachtet auch Tom Regan menschliches Leben pauschal für wichtiger und ist daher dem Neuspeziesismus zuzuordnen.

Die neuspeziesistischen Gesetzesvorschläge sehen vor, höher entwickelten Säugetieren wie Menschenaffen oder Delfinen Grundrechte zu gewähren. Dunayer diskutiert hier einige der willkürlichen Kriterien für diese Annahme (wie den Spiegeltest oder genetische Ähnlichkeit zum Menschen) und deren inkonsistente Umsetzung. Vor allem der Ansatz, nichtmenschliche Tiere nach ihrer Ähnlichkeit zum Menschen zu hierarchisieren, beruht auf schlichtem Anthropozentrismus. In Analogie würde die Vergabe von Menschenrechte aufgrund der Hautfarbe (ihrer "Hellhäutigkeit") als rassistisch abgelehnt.

Als neuspeziesistische Kampagne nennt sie das Great Ape Project als die bekannteste. Dabei ist nicht der Fokus auf Affen das Problem, sondern die Argumente dafür, die auf ethisch irrelevante (und anthropozentrische) Kriterien wie "komplexe Individualität", Selbstbewusstsein usw. beruhen. Strategisch ist es gleichermaßen fragwürdig, weil man von der Basis solcher Argumente aus, die Rechte nicht auf andere Spezies ausdehnen kann, denn alle anderen Tiere sind immer nur noch weniger menschenähnlich. Dabei besteht das Problem nicht darin, dass nicht Affen zuerst Rechte bekommen sollten, sondern dass die Argumentation dafür speziesistisch ist und das Ergebnis daher die anthropozentrische Hierarchie nur verschieben, nicht beseitigen würde.

Der dritte Teil über Antispeziesismus ("Animal Equality") beginnt entsprechend der Reihenfolge mit der Vorstellung eines antispeziesistischen, (wirklich) tierrechtlerischen Weltbildes. Die Idee der Tierrechte ist es, nichtmenschlichen Tieren nicht per se die gleichen Rechte wie Menschen zuzusprechen, sondern 'nur' die Rechte für die Fällen, wo gleiche Interessen berührt werden. Diese Rechte sollten (entgegen Regan) auch gleich stark gewichtet werden. Auf der anderen Seite dürften nichtmenschlichen Tieren natürlich genauso in den Fällen Schaden zugefügt werden, in den das auch bei Menschen erlaubt ist (z.B. in Fällen der Notwehr). Und schließlich sollte Tierrechte entgegen der neuspeziesistischen Vorstellung für alle Tiere mit Bewusstsein gelten, jedoch nicht für solche ohne eindeutige Anzeichen eines Nervensystems.

Eine nichtspeziesistische Gesetzgebung gelte als ein Hauptziel, den Status nichtmenschlicher Tiere als Besitz abzuschaffen und der wichtigste Schritt der Emanzipierung nichtmenschlicher Tiere auf gesetzlicher Ebene ist die Zusprechung des Personenstatus. Dessen Ausweitung ist dabei nur die logische Fortführung der letzten Ausweitung auf ehemalige (nicht-weiße) Sklaven, die zuvor auch als Eigentum, nicht als Personen galten. Dass Delfine bereits jetzt zweifelsfrei den Personenstatus selbst auf speziesistischer Grundlage verdienen würden, wurde unlängst festgestellt (doch rationale Argumente haben die speziesistische Ideologie bisher wenig beeindruckt). Neben dem Recht auf Leben müssten nach Dunayer auch weitere Rechte, wie die auf Freiheit und auf Integrität des Lebensraums, verankert werden.

Als Strategien auf dem Weg dorthin nennt sie die Adoption/Aufnahme von Tieren und Tierbefreiungen. Daneben können solche Gesetze befürwortet werden, die Teilbereiche der Tierausbeutung für mindestens eine Spezies komplett abschaffen, d.h. darunter fallen nicht die "Abschaffungen" von einzelnen Tierausbeutungsformen wie "Legebatterien" zugunsten von "Alternativhaltungen". Da dies nur begrenzt wirksam ist, ist der Boykott der Tierausbeutungsindustrie eine der wichtigsten Strategien: das bedeutet vegan zu leben und andere dazu zu motivieren. Die Verbreitung von Veganismus und die Aufklärung über und Forderung nach Tierrechten (und nicht nach mehr Tier"schutz"), so Dunayer abschließend, bilden das Fundament für die Öffentlichkeitsarbeit.

Das Buch profitiert insgesamt als Einstiegswerk neben seinem konzisen Umfang von seiner klaren Gliederung in drei mal drei Teile durch die Parallelisierung der Unterkapitel, zudem ist es durch ein Register erschlossen. Nur bedingt gelungen, aber auch nur bedingt lösbar, ist das Problem, dass einige unter Altspeziesismus diskutierte Einwände gegen Tierrechte auch von Neuspeziesisten vertreten werden und umgekehrt. Wobei andererseits auch nicht behauptet wurde, es gäbe es klare Trennung. Beiden ist schließlich Speziesismus.
Die Argumentation wird von einer Mischung aus individuellen Erfahrungen und dem Zitieren von wissenschaftlichen Untersuchungen getragen, wobei letzteres jedoch z.T. etwas zu ausführlich geschieht. An manchen Stellen wäre hier eine Einschränkung nicht abträglich gewesen. Positiv im Weiteren ist die eindeutig ablehnende Haltung gegenüber Undingen wie Religion, Tierschutz, Reformismus und Artenschutz.

Jedoch einige kritische Aspekte an Dunayers Werk. Im achten Kapitel spricht sie davon, dass Menschen andere Tiere (menschliche und nichtmenschliche) töten dürften, wenn sie ansonsten verhungern würden. Im neunten heißt es scheinbar mit Bezug darauf: "However, individual humans could hunt unless emancipated nonhumans had a legal right to life." Das könnte als Rechtfertigung für das Inuit-Pseudoargument herangezogen werden, vor dem auch im deutschen Raum selbst erklärte Tierrechtler nicht sicher sind. Ich denke nicht, dass in Extremsituationen der Rechtsschutz aufgehoben werden darf, auch wenn es mildernde Umstände wären. Es verletzt basale Rechte und ist daher in jedem Fall "immoral", weshalb mir ihre Rechtfertigung dafür zu leicht von der Hand geht.
Unvorteilhaft verkürzt ist die Erklärung von abolitionistischen Gesetzen (s.o.). Die Teilabschaffung eines Bereichs ist nämlich nur unter solchen bestimmten Bedingungen, die negative Nebenwirkungen ausschließen, sinnvoll. Ansonsten besteht auch hier die Gefahr, dass es mehr oder minder nur Verschiebungen der Ausbeutungsprobleme sind, denn wenn durch ein Verbot des Experimentierens mit Spezies X, die Experimente dann mit Spezies Y durchgeführt werden, entspricht das der Definition, ist aber kein Fortschritt.

Vehemente Kritik für ihren Umgang mit Francione und dessen Werk bekam sie von Jeff Perz in seiner Rezension "Anti-Speciesism". Er weist darin sehr ausführlich nach, dass sie zum einen wesentlich stärker auf Franciones Theorie aufbaut, als sie es durch Quellenverweise deutlich macht. Zum anderen, dass ihre Kritik an Francione auf aus dem Zusammenhang gerissenen Zitaten beruht, bspw. wenn es um das "eine Recht, kein Eigentum zu sein" geht, was sie als einziges Recht, das Francione fordern würde, darstellt, während es für ihn (wie er auch deutlich, in den Quellen, die sie zitiert, schreibt) lediglich die Voraussetzung dafür ist, überhaupt bedeutungsvolle Rechte zu etablieren (im Gegensatz zu den gegenwärtigen Tierschutzgesetzen).
Dunayer antwortete darauf. Sie bemüht sich hier damit gegenzuargumentieren, dass einige der Kritikpunkte von Perz frühere Arbeiten von ihr nicht berücksichtigt haben. Jedoch geht sie nur auf einige der Kritikpunkte ein, viele bleiben unberührt, sodass sie v.a. den zweiten Vorwurf, die fehlerhafte Interpretation und Wiedergabe Franciones Arbeit nicht wirklich ausräumen kann. Sie anerkennt jedoch die Kritik, dass ihre Speziesismus-Definition nicht ganz gelungen war (wie auch oben angedeutet). Die neue lautet nunmehr: "A failure, on the basis of species, to accord anyone equal consideration.”
Perz antwortete wiederum und geht ausführlich auf alle von ihr vorgebrachten Gegenargumente ein.

Fazit: In Übersichtlichkeit und Aufbau ist es gelungen, auch in der Diskussion der gegenwärtigen Varianten des Speziesismus dürfte man kaum eine konzisere Darstellung finden. Perfekt ist es jedoch nicht, sofern man überhaupt Perfektion erwarten könnte und besonders ihre Kritik an Francione ist kritisch zu lesen.

Some days ago, most Americans had never heard of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin. Now, following her Vice Presidential acceptance speech, viewed live by more than 40 million people, Palin is viewed favorably by 58% of American voters according to the latest Rasmussen Reports survey. The self-described ‘hockey mom’’s poll ratings, if they are to be believed, are that of a rock superstar who is rated now higher than either McCain or Democrat Obama. The same Bush-Cheney propaganda apparatus that made the nation believe that Saddam Hussein was the new Hitler and that Georgia was a helpless victim of ruthless Russian aggression after 8.8.08 in Georgia is clearly behind one of the most impressive media propaganda efforts in recent history—the effort to package Republican Vice Presidential candidate, Sarah Palin, Governor of Alaska for less than 19 months, to be the American dream candidate. Her religious roots are something she has been deliberately vague about. It’s worth a closer look.

As I discuss in some detail in my soon-to-be-released book, Full Spectrum Dominance: Totalitarian Democracy in the New World Order, one of the most significant transformations of American domestic politics over the past three decades since the early 1970’s, when George H.W. Bush was head of the CIA, has been the deliberate manipulation of significant segments of the population, most of them undoubtedly sincere believing people, around the ideology of ‘born-again’ evangelical Christian Fundamentalism to create something known as the Christian Right. Within the broad spectrum of fundamentalist denominations there are some currents which are particularly alarming. Sarah Palin comes out of such a milieu.

The phenomenon of the rapid spread within the United States since the 1980’s of evangelical Pentecostalism is a political phenomenon which has become so influential that the two elections of George W. Bush as well as countless races for Senate or Congress often depend on the backing or lack of it from the organized Religious Right.

The spawning of some Christian Right sects also creates an ideology to drive the shock troops willing to literally ‘die for Christ’ in places such as Iraq or Afghanistan, Iran or elsewhere that the Pentagon needs their services. That ideology has been used to build a fanatical activist base within the Republican Party which backs a right-wing domestic agenda and a military foreign policy that sees Islam or other suitable opponents of the US power elite as Satanism incarnate. How does Sarah Palin fit into this?

The CNP: manipulating religion to political ends

Many of the religious evangelical groups in America are coordinated top-down by a secretive organization called the Committee on National Policy. Former close Bush adviser, Rev. Ted Haggard, was a member of the Committee on National Policy until a sex and drugs scandal forced him out in late 2006.

Haggard was Pastor of the New Life Church in Colorado Springs described as the ‘evangelical Vatican,’ and was head of the National Association of Evangelicals. Ted Haggard was also a member of a highly significant and little-understood sect known as Joel’s Army or the Manifest Sons of God, the same circles which spawned Sarah Palin.

Another noteworthy member of the CNP as was Grover Nyquist, the man once described as the ‘Field Marshall of the Bush Plan.’

The CNP, created in the early 1980’s during the Reagan era, is the nexus for several odd and quite powerful organizations. It was described by ABC's Marc J. Ambinder as ‘the conservative version of the Council on Foreign Relations.’ CNP Members include names such as General John Singlaub, shipping magnate J. Peter Grace, Texas billionaire Nelson Bunker Hunt, Edwin J. Feulner Jr of the right-wing Heritage Foundation, Rev. Pat Robertson of the Christian Broadcasting Network, Jerry Falwell, Tim LaHaye and most of the prominent names in the Christian Right around Bush. It has included prominent politicians including Senator Trent Lott, Senator Don Nickles, former Attorney General Ed Meese, Col. Oliver North of Iran-Contra fame, and Right-wing philanthropist Else Prince, mother of Erik Prince, the founder of Blackwater the controversial private security firm.1

CNP members have also included not only the Rev. Sun Myung Moon Unification Church, definitely a bizarre formation whose founder openly states that he is superior to Christ. The CNP as well reportedly includes the Church of Scientology.2

CNP member and GOP strategist, Gary Bauer, links both. Bauer’s Family Research Council was a signatory of the Scientology Pledge to remove psychology from California schools and replace it with L. Ron Hubbard's Dianetics. Bauer was also a speaker at Sun Myung Moon's Family Federation for World Peace and Unification Conference in 1996.

Religious researchers Paul and Phillip Collins describe the CNP as follows: ‘The CNP appears to be a creation of factions of the power elite designed to mobilize well-meaning Christians to unwittingly support elite initiatives. The CNP could also be considered a project in religious engineering that empties Christianity of its metaphysical substance and re-conceptualizes many of its principles and concepts according to the socially and politically expedient designs of the elite. These contentions are supported by the fact that many CNP members are also members of other organizations and/or criminal enterprises that are tied directly to the power elite.’3

In order to shape public debate over the course of national military and foreign as well as domestic policy, the US establishment had to create mass-based organizations to manipulate public opinion in ways contrary to the self-interest of the majority of the American people. The Committee on National Policy was formed to be a central part of this mass manipulation.

The Committee on National Policy is a vital link between multi-billion dollar defense contractors, Washington lobbyists like the convicted felon and Republican fundraiser, Jack Abramoff, and the Christian Right. It’s at the heart of a new axis between right-wing military politics, support for the Pentagon war agenda globally and the neo-conservative political control of much of US foreign and defense policy.

The CNP has been at the center of Karl Rove’s carefully-constructed Bush political machine. Tom Delay and dozens of top Bush Administration Republicans are or had been members of the CNP. Few details about the organization are leaked to the public. As secretive as the Bilderberg Group if not more so, the CNP releases no press statements, meets in secret and never reveals names of its members willingly.

The elite circles behind the Bush Presidency have crafted an extremely powerful political machine using the forces and energies of the Christian Right and millions of American Christians unaware of the darker manipulations. Is Sarah Palin a part of such darker manipulations?

Sarah Palin and Dominionism

Sarah Palin it appears now, was chosen very carefully as she comes out of the very fundamentalist evangelical circles that the CNP uses to mobilize and shape America’s political agenda.

Palin reportedly drew early attention from state GOP leadership when, during her first mayoral campaign, she ran on an anti-abortion platform. Normally, political parties do not get involved in Alaskan municipal elections because they are nonpartisan. But once word of her evangelical views made its way to Juneau, the state capitol, state Republicans put money behind her campaign. According to researcher, Charley James, "Once in office, Palin set out to build a machine that chewed up anyone who got in her way. The good, Godly Christian turns out to be anything but."

The religious background of Sarah Palin is not unrelated to her bid to take the nation’s second highest office. She herself has been extremely vague about that background. Given the details, it becomes clearer perhaps why.

Sarah Palin has spent more than two and a half decades of her life as a member of an Alaska church which is part of a fanatical Christian-named cult project that is sweeping across America. Palin comes out of the most radical stream of US Born-Again Evangelism known as ‘Joel’s Army,’ an offshoot of what is called Dominionism and sometimes also called the Latter Rain cult or Manifest Sons of God. The movement deliberately attempts to remain below the radar screen.

A Dominionist soldier in McCain’s Army

Sarah Palin is a product of an extreme fringe of the American Evangelical movement known variously as the Third Wave Movement, also known as the New Apostolic Reformation, or as Joel's Army, a part of what is called Dominionism. Until 2002 according to their own website, Palin was a member of Wasilla Assembly of God with Senior Pastor Ed Kalnins. Online video clips of Palin speaking from the pulpit of this church are revealing. Curiously, between the time this article was begun on September 9th and the 11th, the video was removed without explanation:

As one researcher familiar with the history of the Third Wave Movement or Dominionism describes, ‘The Third Wave is a revival of the theology of the Latter Rain tent revivals of the 1950s and 1960s led by William Branham and others. It is based on the idea that in the end times there will be an outpouring of supernatural powers on a group of Christians that will take authority over the existing church and the world. The believing Christians of the world will be reorganized under the Fivefold Ministry and the church restructured under the authority of Prophets and Apostles and others anointed by God. The young generation will form ‘Joel’s Army’ to rise up and battle evil and retake the earth for God.’4

The excesses of this movement were declared a heresy in 1949 by the General Council of the Assemblies of God, and again condemned through Resolution 16 in 2000.

Sarah H. Leslie, a former Christian Right leader, describes the ideology of Dominionism:

‘The Gospel of Salvation is achieved by setting up the ‘Kingdom of God’ as a literal and physical kingdom to be ‘advanced’ on Earth in the present age. Some dominionists liken the New Testament Kingdom to the Old Testament Israel in ways that justify taking up the sword, or other methods of punitive judgment, to war against enemies of their kingdom.

‘Dominionists teach that men can be coerced or compelled to enter the kingdom. They assign to the Church duties and rights that belong Scripturally only to Jesus Christ. This includes the esoteric belief that believers can ‘incarnate’ Christ and function as His body on Earth to establish His kingdom rule. An inordinate emphasis is placed on man’s efforts; the doctrine of the sovereignty of God is diminished.’5

Leslie quotes from Al Dager’s Vengeance Is Ours: The Church In Dominion: ‘Dominion theology is predicated upon three basic beliefs: 1) Satan usurped man’s dominion over the earth through the temptation of Adam and Eve; 2) The Church is God’s instrument to take dominion back from Satan; 3) Jesus cannot or will not return until the Church has taken dominion by gaining control of the earth’s governmental and social institutions.’6

Sarah Leslie pinpoints to the central deception behind the current spread of Dominionism among various Protestant denominations across America today:

‘Dominion theology is a heresy. As such it is rarely presented as openly as the definitions above may indicate. Outside of the Reconstructionist camp, evangelical dominionism has wrapped itself in slick packages – one piece at a time – for mass-media consumption. This has been a slow process, taking several decades. Few evangelicals would recognize the word ‘dominionism’ or know what it means. This is because other terminologies have been developed which soft-sell dominionism, concealing the full scope of the agenda. Many evangelicals (and even their more conservative counterparts, the fundamentalists) may adhere to tidbits of dominionism without recognizing the error…

‘To most effectively propagate their agenda, dominionist leaders first developed new ecclesiologies, eschatologies and soteriologies for targeted audiences along the major denominational fault lines of evangelical Christianity. Then the 1990s Promise Keepers men’s movement was used as a vehicle to ‘break down the walls’, i.e., cross denominational barriers for the purpose of exporting dominionism to the wider evangelical subculture. This strategy was so effective that it reached into the mainline Protestant denominations. Dominionists have carefully selected leaders to be trained as ‘change agents’ for ‘transformation’ (dominion) in an erudite manner that belies the media stereotype of southern-talking, Bible-thumping, fundamentalist half-wits.’7

Wasilla Assembly of God

Sarah Palin comes out of the circles of such Dominionist networks. Sarah Palin was reportedly re-baptized at age twelve at the Wasilla Assembly of God church. Palin attended the church from the time she was ten until 2002, over twenty-eight years. Palin's association with the Wasilla Assembly of God has continued nearly up to the day she was picked by Senator John McCain as running mate.

Palin is now under investigation for possible improper use of state travel funds for a trip she made on June 8 to Wasilla. Her trip in turns out was to attend a Wasilla Assembly of God ‘Masters Commission’ graduation ceremony, and a multi-church Wasilla event known as ‘One Lord Sunday.’ At the latter, Palin and Alaska LT Governor Scott Parnell were publicly blessed, onstage before an estimated crowd of 6,000, through the "laying on of hands" by Wasilla Assembly of God's Head Pastor Ed Kalnins, her former pastor.

The pastor, Ed Kalnins, and Masters Commission students have traveled to South Carolina to participate in a ‘prophetic conference’ at Morningstar Ministries, one of the major ministries of the Third Wave movement. The head of prophecy at Morningstar, Steve Thompson, is currently scheduled to do a prophecy seminar at the Wasilla Assembly of God. Other major leaders in the movement have also traveled to Wasilla to visit and speak at the church.

In his sermons, Kalnins promotes such exotic theological concepts as the possession of geographic territories by demonic spirits and the inter-generational transmission of family ‘curses.’ Palin has also been ‘anointed,’ by an African cleric, Bishop Thomas Muthee, prominent in the Joel’s Army movement, who has repeatedly visited the Wasilla Assembly of God and claims to have effected positive, dramatic social change in a Kenyan town by driving out a ‘spirit of witchcraft.’[mein Link, AS] 8

As Governor in Juneau, six hundred miles from Wasilla, Palin attends the Juneau Christian Church of Pastor Mike Rose, an Assembly of God Third Wave church.

Sarah Leslie describes the movement which has supported Sarah Palin for most of her life:

‘New Apostolic Reformation. This dominionist sect is a direct offshoot of the Latter Rain cult (also known as Joel’s Army or Manifest Sons of God). Chief architect of this movement for the past two decades is C. Peter Wagner, President of Global Harvest Ministries and Chancellor of the Wagner Leadership Institute. His spiritual warfare teachings have been widely disseminated through mission networks such as AD 2000, which was closely associated with the Lausanne Movement. A prominent individual connected to this sect is Ted Haggard, current head of the National Association of Evangelicals.’9

C. Peter Wagner is quoted by Leslie defining his view of what he calls ‘The New Apostolic Reformation,’:

‘Since 2001, the body of Christ has been in the Second Apostolic Age. The apostolic/prophetic government of the church is now in place. . . . We began to build our base by locating and identifying with the intercessory prayer movements. This time, however, we feel that God wants us to start governmentally, connecting with the apostles of the region. God has already raised up for us a key apostle in one of the strategic nations of the Middle East and other apostles are already coming on board. Once we have the apostles in place, we will then bring the intercessors and the prophets into the inner circle, and we will end up with the spiritual core we need to move ahead for retaking the dominion that is rightfully ours.’-- C. Peter Wagner

Wagner, who took over Haggard’s Colorado Springs center when the latter was forced to resign in disgrace, claims that there are as many New Apostolic Reformation churches in the US as Southern Baptist churches. The movement worldwide is estimated as high as 100 million people. And yet its impact is completely under the radar of most researchers outside of those in the movement itself.

An ‘end-time soldier in God’s army’?

All evidence suggests Palin was carefully selected by the leadership of the Bush-Cheney-McCain Republican party to galvanize the Party’s activist Evangelical base, something McCain had been unable to do.

Some theological and political background to the Joel’s Army or Third Wave movement as it is also known, is instructive. It teaches a radical fundamentalist creed that its adherents must actively engage in politics, to become what they term, ‘soldiers in God’s Army.’

The Joel’s Army movement focuses on recruiting young people to sessions of writhing on the floor in uncontrollable ecstasy, calling it a sign of the ‘Holy Spirit.’ Children as young as five speak of having ‘gotten saved.’ The movement is extremely authoritarian according to those conservative Christian churches who have studied and openly oppose the sect as heretical. It teaches a dogma that echoes the infamous Manichean line of George Bush following the shock of September 11, 2001: ‘There are two kinds of people in the World: Those who love Jesus, and those who don’t.’

Until recently a ‘general’ in Joel’s Army was a 32-year old Canadian, Todd Bentley. In one case, on YouTube, clips of his most dramatic healings have been condensed into a three-minute highlight reel. Bentley describes God ordering him to kick an elderly lady in the face. A report published by the Southern Poverty Law Center, a watchdog group, describes the Joel’s Army mass recruiting techniques of Bentley:

‘Todd Bentley has a long night ahead of him, resurrecting the dead, healing the blind, and exploding cancerous tumors. Since April 3, the 32-year-old, heavily tattooed, body-pierced, shaved-head Canadian preacher has been leading a continuous "supernatural healing revival" in central Florida. To contain the 10,000-plus crowds flocking from around the globe, Bentley has rented baseball stadiums, arenas and airport hangars at a cost of up to $15,000 a day. Many in attendance are church pastors themselves who believe Bentley to be a prophet and don't bat an eye when he tells them he's seen King David and spoken with the Apostle Paul in heaven...Tattooed across his sternum are military dog tags that read "Joel's Army." They're evidence of Bentley's generalship in a rapidly growing apocalyptic movement that's gone largely unnoticed by watchdogs of the theocratic right. According to Bentley and a handful of other "hyper-charismatic" preachers advancing the same agenda, Joel's Army is prophesied to become an Armageddon-ready military force of young people with a divine mandate to physically impose Christian "dominion" on non-believers.’ 10

Their name comes from their special focus on the Old Testament Book of Joel, Chapter Two. On his website, Bentley declares,

‘An end-time army has one common purpose -- to aggressively take ground for the kingdom of God under the authority of Jesus Christ, the Dread Champion…The trumpet is sounding, calling on-fire, revolutionary believers to enlist in Joel's Army. ... Many are now ready to be mobilized to establish and advance God's kingdom on earth.’

This past March, at a ‘Passion for Jesus’ conference in Kansas City sponsored by the International House of Prayer, or IHOP, a ministry for teenagers from the heavy metal, punk and goth scenes, one Joel’s Army pastor, Lou Engle, called on his audience for vengeance:

‘I believe we're headed to an Elijah/Jezebel showdown on the Earth, not just in America but all over the globe, and the main warriors will be the prophets of Baal versus the prophets of God, and there will be no middle ground," said Engle. He was referring to the Baal of the Old Testament, a pagan idol whose followers were slaughtered under orders from the prophet Elijah.

‘There's an Elijah generation that's going to be the forerunners for the coming of Jesus, a generation marked not by their niceness but by the intensity of their passion," Engle continued. ‘The kingdom of heaven suffers violence and the violent take it by force. Such force demands an equal response, and Jesus is going to make war on everything that hinders love, with his eyes blazing fire.’

Joel's Army believers are hard-core Christian ‘dominionists,’ meaning they believe that America, along with the rest of the world, should be governed by conservative Christians and a conservative Christian interpretation of biblical law. There is no room in their doctrine for democracy or pluralism. To paraphrase George W. Bush, ‘You’re either with us or you are against us.’

Joel's Army followers are most often labile teenagers and young adults. They are taught to believe they're members of the final generation to come of age before the end of the world. Sarah Palin was twelve when she first came into these circles.

Palin recently told interviewer Charles Gibson of ABC News that Georgia should be granted membership of NATO. When pressed on whether this would mean that the US would be obliged to defend Georgia if Russian troops went into the country again, she replied, ‘Perhaps so. I mean, that is the agreement when you are a NATO ally, is if another country is attacked, you're going to be expected to be called upon and help…We have got to show the support, in this case, for Georgia.’ Is this Sarah Palin a stateswoman with foreign policy experience, or is it Sarah Palin the Dominionist who sees a potential war with Russia as part of an ‘Elijah/Jezebel showdown on the Earth’?

This is the background of the woman who might well become Vice President to a 72-year old President John McCain, a man reported to have severe skin cancer and other major health problems. According to the US Constitutional succession, should McCain be incapacitated or die in office, she would become President.

Anfang der 70er Jahre entwickelte sich aus der Hunt Saboteurs Association in Großbritannien die Animal Liberation Front. Sie gilt heute als eine der aktivsten und effektivsten Bewegungen, die auf das Konzept der Direkten Aktion zurückgreifen.

Durch eine Breite von illegalisierten Taktiken hat die ALF zahllose Tiere aus der Gefangenschaft befreit und ihnen ein Leben frei von Ausbeutung und Qualen ermöglicht. Darüber hinaus wurden zahlreichen Betrieben und Konzernen, welche von Tierausbeutung profitieren, ernorme Kosten beschert oder diese sahen sich gezwungen ihre Einrichtung ein für alle mal zu schließen.

Der Vortrag beschäftigt sich mit der Geschichte der ALF und bringt auch neuere Entwicklungen, wie das Konzept der "offenen Befreiungen" zur Sprache. Nicht zuletzt sollen auch umstrittene Themen wie die Frage nach Gewalt und Sachbeschädigung, sowie der staatlichen Repression zur Diskussion kommen.

Ausgehend von der Überlegung, dass Tieren grundsätzliche Rechte zugesprochen werden sollten, soll ein kritischer Blick auf das derzeitige Mensch-Tier-Verhältnis geworfen werden. Tiere werden nach Nützlichkeitskriterien für Menschen ontologisiert und ausgebeutet. Dies entspricht keinesfalls ihrer „naturgegebenen“ Bestimmung, als vielmehr einem sozialen Konstrukt. Der Ideologie des Speziesismus, nach der Menschen das Recht haben alle nicht-menschlichen Individuen aufgrund der Nicht-Zugehörigkeit zur Spezie Mensch zu beherrschen, soll die Idee des Tierbefreiungsgedanken entgegengestellt werden, nach der es keinerlei Legitimation für jedwede Ausbeutung, Unterdrückung und Beherrschung von Tieren geben kann. Darüber hinaus wird die Unterdrückung der Tiere in Beziehung zu anderen Herrschaftsmechanismen gesetzt und die politische Praxis der Tierbefreiungsbewegung, bspw. das Konzept des Campaignings und der Direkten Aktionen, aufgezeigt.

Die Funktionalisierung des
„tierlichen“ und „weiblichen“ Körpers

Bei allen "geistigen" Debatten um Ungleichheit, Diskriminierung, Ausbeutung, Gewalt gegen Tiere und Frauen und den ihnen zugrundeliegenden sozialen Konstruktionen - die soziale Ausschließung findet nicht nur auf symbolischer Ebene statt, sondern mittels zahlreicher praktischer Techniken und Strategien als körperlich erfahrbare Gewalt. Wie der Andere - "Frau", "Tier" - wahrgenommen wird, seine Lebensäußerungen gedeutet werden, ist an Wahrnehmungs- und Deutungsprogramme der Gesellschaft gebunden. Mit diesen Programmen werden jedoch gleichzeitig Handlungsprogramme geliefert, d.h. Anweisungen, wie der Andere zu behandeln sei. Behandelt wird, ganz konkret, vor allem der Körper des Anderen. Die auf der symbolischen Ebene vorgenommenen Klassifizierungen und Attribuierungen werden den Körpern eingeschrieben. Die Klassifizierung des Anderen läuft v.a. entlangt der ihm zugeschriebenen gesellschaftlichen und hier insbesondere ökonomischen Funktion. Die Funktionalisierung der Körper von Frauen und Tieren für bestimmte Zwecke der Gesellschaft wird u.a. sichtbar in der Manipulation, Disziplinierung, Zerstörung, Konsumption ihrer Körper, die das Individuum ausblendet und es als Funktionswert benutzt. Diese Praktiken wirken zurück auf die symbolische Ebene und schreiben sich durch Habitualisierung und schließlich Institutionalisierung als "Frauen/Tiere sind dafür da, dass..." fest. In dem Vortrag sollen diese Mechanismen anhand der Behandlung von Frauen und Tieren und den dieser zugrundeliegenden Körperkonzepten dargestellt werden.

Actions Speak Louder
Animal Liberation For Direct Action

Anfang der 70er Jahre entwickelte sich aus der Hunt Saboteurs Association in Großbritannien die Animal Liberation Front. Sie gilt heute als eine der aktivsten und effektivsten Bewegungen, die auf das Konzept der Direkten Aktion zurückgreifen.

Durch eine Breite von illegalisierten Taktiken hat die ALF zahllose Tiere aus der Gefangenschaft befreit und ihnen ein Leben frei von Ausbeutung und Qualen ermöglicht. Darüber hinaus wurden zahlreichen Betrieben und Konzernen, welche von Tierausbeutung profitieren, ernorme Kosten beschert oder diese sahen sich gezwungen ihre Einrichtung ein für alle mal zu schließen.

Der Vortrag beschäftigt sich mit der Geschichte der ALF und bringt auch neuere Entwicklungen, wie das Konzept der „offenen Befreiungen“ zur Sprache. Nicht zuletzt sollen auch umstrittene Themen wie die Frage nach Gewalt und Sachbeschädigung, sowie der staatlichen Repression zur Diskussion kommen.

Von (nicht)menschlichen Tieren
Und (nicht)natürlichen Menschen

Was ist eigentlich Natur, in einem Zeitalter, indem sie Technisch herstellbar ist? Was definiert, wo Grenzen z.B. zwischen Menschen und Tieren verlaufen. Und welchen Sinn haben diese Grenzziehungen? Wodurch wird die allgegenwärtige Herrschaft über die nichtmenschliche Natur gerechtfertigt? Wie ist ihre Entstehungsgeschichte? Und mit welchen anderen gesellschaftlichen Entwicklungen steht sie historisch im Zusammenhang? Was kann eine Auseinadersetzung mit poststrukturalistischen Theorien, die sich grob vereinfacht ausgedrückt, mit Sprache und Macht beschäftigen, für eine politische Relevanz für die Tierbefreiungs/Tierrechtsszene haben? Und wie sehen die Zusammenhänge der Herrschaft über „Natur“ und nicht menschliche „Tiere“ mit anderen Unterdrückungsformen, wie dem Patriarchat aus?

Zu diesen und weiteren Fragen werden wir im Vortrag „Von (nicht)menschlichen Tieren und (nicht)natürlichen Menschen“ hoffentlich spannende Diskussionen führen um evtl. einige Antworten aber sicherlich noch viel mehr Fragen herauszuarbeiten.

Der Vortrag will versuchen, postmoderne Ansätze zur Hilfe zu nehmen um eine Kritik an Naturbeherrschung und Tierausbeutung zu entwickeln. Dabei sollen die Theorien, nicht völlig abgehoben und für Leute ohne philosophischen Hintergrund verständlich, zur Anwendung in einer politischen Praxis herangeführt und allgemein verständlich erklärt werden.

Tierversuche oder
Heiligt der Zweck die Mittel?

Wie in vielen anderen Bereichen hat sich auch bei Tierversuchen eine scheinbar unvermeidbare Instrumentalisierung von Tieren für menschliche Zwecke etabliert. Die damit befassten Experimentatoren begründen ihre Arbeit als nützlich für die menschliche Gesellschaft, kritische Stimmen werden als unwissenschaftlich oder fortschrittsfeindlich stigmatisiert.

In diesem Vortrag soll kurz die Entwicklung angerissen werden, die zu dieser Situation führte. Außerdem werden die zerbrechlichen Argumente der Vivisektoren entlarvt und Gegenargumente aufgezeigt, die (nicht nur) aus einer konsequent antispeziesistischen Haltung entspringen.

Tierversuche spiegeln auf Kosten unserer Mitgeschöpfe eine trügerische Sicherheit für hilfesuchende Menschen vor; ihre Befürworter blockieren die Entwicklung tierfreier Alternativen. Der Vortrag möchte die Zuhörer mit dem grundlegenden Rüstzeug ausstatten, sich fundiert zu diesen Missständen positionieren zu können.

Eine antispeziesistische Kritik der verkürzten Herrschaftskritik

Nahezu alle (linken) Diskurse um den Herrschaftsbegriff sind dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass sie das Prinzip der Herrschaft, wenn es um Menschen geht, radikal kritisieren, jedoch die Beherrschung von Natur und Tieren ungebrochen hinnehmen, sogar naiv positiv perpetuieren. Dieses Vorgehen ist vor allem vor dem Hintergrund zu hinterfragen, dass Mensch und Tier als Wahrnehmungssubjekte in der Leidensfähigkeit und Empfindung von Glück eng verwandt sind. Obwohl nach heutigem biologischen, medizinischen und ethologischen Kenntnisstand Tiere in der Erfahrung von Schmerz sogar als dem homo sapiens gleich reflektiert werden müssen, ist den meisten Menschen nichts verhasster als die Erinnerung an ihre Tierähnlichkeit.

Um dem emanzipatorischen Postulat der "Solidarität mit den quälbaren Körpern" (Brecht) der Abschaffung des Leidens (im Sinne von vermeidbarem Unrecht) zu entgehen, verschanzen sich nicht selten sogar Materialisten hinter Relikten des biblischen Kreationismus oder anderen reaktionären Irrationalismen. Mit Hilfe von Begriffen aus der Kritischen Theorie - wie "doppelte Naturbeherrschung", "pathische Projektion" - "moralisches Gefühl", soll die verkürzte Herrschaftskritik ausgiebig kritisiert und ein antispeziesistisches Plädoyer für eine wahrhaft befreite Gesellschaft, die die Befreiung der Tiere einschließt, entworfen werden.

It may eat flies and stink to high heaven, but if this robot works, it will be an important step towards making robots fully autonomous.

To survive without human help, a robot needs to be able to generate its own energy. So Chris Melhuish and his team of robotics experts at the University of the West of England in Bristol are developing a robot that catches flies and digests them in a special reactor cell that generates electricity.

So what is the downside? The robot will most likely have to attract the hapless flies by using a stinking lure concocted from human excrement.

Called EcoBot II, the robot is part of a drive to make "release and forget" robots that can be sent into dangerous or inhospitable areas to carry out remote industrial or military monitoring of, say, temperature or toxic gas concentrations. Sensors on the robot feed a data logger that periodically radios the results back to a base station.


Exoskeleton electricity


The robot's energy source is the sugar in the polysaccharide called chitin that makes up a fly's exoskeleton. EcoBot II digests the flies in an array of eight microbial fuel cells (MFCs), which use bacteria from sewage to break down the sugars, releasing electrons that drive an electric current (see graphic).

In its present form, EcoBot II still has to be manually fed fistfuls of dead bluebottles, but the ultimate aim of the UWE robotics team is to make the droid predatory, using sewage as a bait to catch the flies.

"One of the great things about flies is that you can get them to come to you," says Melhuish. The team has yet to tackle this, but speculates that it would involve using a bottleneck-style flytrap with some form of pump to suck the flies into the digestion chambers.

With a top speed of 10 centimetres per hour, EcoBot II's roving prowess is still modest to say the least. "Every 12 minutes it gets enough energy to take a step forwards two centimetres and send a transmission back," says Melhuish.

But it does not need to catch too many flies to do so, says team member Ioannis Ieropoulos. In tests, EcoBot II travelled for five days on just eight fat flies - one in each MFC.


Donated sewage


So how do flies get turned into electricity? Each MFC comprises an anaerobic chamber filled with raw sewage slurry - donated by UWE's local utility, Wessex Water. The flies become food for the bacteria that thrive in the slurry.

Enzymes produced by the bacteria break down the chitin to release sugar molecules. These are then absorbed and metabolised by the bacteria. In the process, the bacteria release electrons that are harnessed to create an electric current.

Previous efforts to use carnivorous MFCs to drive a robot included an abortive UWE effort: the Slugbot. This was designed to hunt slugs on farms by using imaging systems to spot and grab the pests, and then deliver them to a digester that produces methane to power a fuel cell.

The electricity generated would have been used to charge the Slugbot when it arrived at a docking station. But the methane-based system took too long to produce power, and the team realised that MFCs offered far more promise.

Elsewhere, researchers in Florida created a train-like robot dubbed Chew Chew (New Scientist print edition, 22 July 2000) that used MFCs to charge a battery, but the bacteria had to be fed on sugar cubes.

For an autonomous robot to survive in the wild, relying on such refined foodstuffs is not an option, says Melhuish. EcoBot II, on the other hand, is the first robot to use unrefined fuel. Just do not stand downwind.

Vegetarians rediscover the taste of red meat

CARNIVORISM is back. After years in the wilderness, knocked by food scares,
red meat consumption has returned to levels last seen before the BSE crisis,
while vegetarianism is declining for the first time since the 1970s.

The change in British eating habits is shown in the Realeat Survey,
conducted by Gallup and cited by the Vegetarian Society as the most reliable
record of meat-eating habits, and in figures from the Meat and Livestock
Commission.

More than a million Britons abandoned vegetarianism over the past two years,
while more red meat is eaten than at any time since 1985. This return to
carnivorism was acknowledged by the Vegetarian Society yesterday.

"There was a false high in the total number of committed vegetarians because
of the reaction to BSE and FMD," a spokesman said.

"When you take out that peak, we have returned to pre-BSE levels, which fits
well within a pattern of gradual, steady growth over the past 25 years, from
2.1 per cent in 1984 to four per cent now."

Vegetarianism increased strongly in the early 1990s. It peaked at 3.25
million in 1997, a year after the brain wasting disease vCJD was linked by
scientists to mad cow disease, when some 2,000 people a week were said to be
giving up meat.

But the most recent figures from the Realeat Survey, which has recorded
eating habits since 1984, show only 2.24 million Britons now claim to be
vegetarians, the lowest since 1990.

Chris Gladman, 32, of Allens butchers in Mayfair, central London, said:
"Over the past year, there has been a marked turnaround. We've seen an
increase in sales of around 30 per cent. The difference now is that
customers want organic and free range products."

Peter Bradford, 58, the marketing manager of Fresh & Wild, an organic food
store in west London, agreed. "Many customers are going for organically
produced meats from specialist stores because they cannot guarantee the
quality of the meat otherwise."

The Vegetarian Society has little time for those who avoid meat but eat
fish, but with the health benefits of factory-farmed fish increasingly
questioned, many former vegetarians said yesterday they were more inclined
to eat meat than anything from the sea.

Justine Bothwick, 33, a public relations executive, of Godalming, Surrey,
returned to meat after a 10-year absence because she thought it could be a
healthier option. "I decided to become a selective carnivore, eating only
meat or fish that I know has been raised well and killed humanely."

Kate Ewing, 31, a nutritionist who runs the Pure Foods Clinic in Mayfair,
recently turned her back on vegetarianism after 18 years. "I became
concerned that there are things in meat, such as vitamins B3 and B12,
selenium and chromium, that are in good supply in chicken, but which you
don't get much of in vegetables. I now eat organic chicken and steak - for
the iron - about twice a week and oily fish twice a week."

Rikki Hunt, 49, a former chairman of Swindon Town football club and owner of
a string of health food shops, returned to meat after 20 years when he
realised he was not getting enough energy from vegetables for his hobby of
mountaineering.

"I'd failed to climb Aconcagua four times, then one evening I realised I was
eating plain rice while the other climbers were eating meat and rice. I went
on a high meat diet for months, returned to Aconcagua and strolled it. I
haven't looked back."

The trend is mirrored among celebrities such as Madonna, who claimed to be
vegetarian until the birth of Lourdes, her first child, when she professed
deep admiration for the turkey burgers made by Carlos, her daughter's
father. Since marrying Guy Ritchie, the film director, Madonna has become a
fully-fledged carnivore, accompanying her husband on pheasant shoots.

Drew Barrymore, the actress, recently turned her back on a long period of
vegetarianism. She now eats meat and wears leather shoes, while Lowri
Turner, the television presenter, admitted to succumbing to cravings for red
meat during pregnancy.

Last year at the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts, which for years had
one of the best vegetarian restaurants in Britain, using recipes devised by
Linda McCartney, students overturned Sir Paul McCartney's decree that no
meat should be served on the premises.

According to the Meat and Livestock Commission figures, we now consume
985,000 tons of beef a year, a third of which is imported.

Mutton and lamb sales are at their highest since 1990, and we eat more pork
than ever, though bacon consumption has hardly changed since 1995. Only
chicken, foreign supplies of which the Food Standards Agency recently found
were often adulterated with water, beef and pork proteins to increase its
weight, has declined in recent years.

Hochsitz im Kreis Düren gesprengt!
Am Donnerstag, dem 1. Juni um 00:59 h kam es in 52382 Niederzier-Hambach (kreis Düren), Feldgemarkung Höhe Sportplatz, zwischen der Landstraße 255 und dem überhöhten Innenteil der Sophienhöhe, zum Brand eines Hochsitzes. Bei der Spurensuche wurden im Brandschutt Gegenstände aufgefunden, die vermuten lassen, dass der Brand mittels einer Sprengvorrichtung gelegt wurde. Im Einzelnen handelte es sich dabei um die Reste eines Weckers, Kohlestifte, diverse Kabelteile und Batterieklemmen. In die Ermittlungen nach dem Täter wurde inzwischen auch das Landeskriminalamt in Düsseldorf eingeschaltet. Bisher existiert kein Tatverdacht. Der geschädigte Jagdausübungsberechtigte hat für Hinweise, die zur gerichtsverwertbaren Aufklärung der Tat führen eine Belohnung i Höhe von 2000,00 DM ausgesetzt.

Wie haben wir uns das vorzustellen (wir, die wir des logischen Denkens fähig sind)?

1. die "kleinen tierfreunde" (plötzlich Plural? egal ...) sägen also die Träger an, der Jäger fällt runter, die "kleinen tierfreunde" beobachten das, schreiben ein Bekennerschreiben, "argumentiert,dass es doch 'die richtigen' getroffen habe", kommen wieder und legen das in den "Hochstand"?

2. die "kleinen tierfreunde" erfahren bei einer Wahrsagerin, daß bei ihrer bevorstehende Sägerei nicht spielende Kinder, sondern ein Jäger vom Hochsitz fällt, schreiben ein Bekennerschreiben, "argumentiert,dass es doch 'die richtigen' getroffen habe", legen das in den "Hochstand", sägen dann die Träger an, und die Prophezeihung erfüllt sich?

3. der Jäger fällt besoffen vom Hochsitz, will das nicht eingestehen und fälscht plump die "Beweise" (da er des logischen Denkens so unfähig ist wie die, die Version 1 oder 2 kaufen).

4. der Nachbarjäger begeht einen Anschlag mit plump gefälschten "Beweisen", weiter wie Punkt 3.

5. Omnivore alias Redfox hat sich mit seinen Aussagen von wegen "argumentiert,dass es doch 'die richtigen' getroffen habe" zu weit aus dem Fenster gelehnt (siehe unten), er muß daher die entsprechnede Passge in dem "Bekennerschreiben" (das von einem Jäger oder sonstigen Gewalttäter, offensichtlich aber nicht von Tierrechtlern stammen kann) oder aber das "Bekennerschreiben" selbst schlicht erfinden - wieder weiter wie Punkt 3.

Ich kann es nocheinmal wiederholen: jedem denkenden Menschen muß klar sein, daß Tierrechtler eben keine Hochsitze ansägen, da dadurch Tiere (spielende Kinder, Jäger) gefährdet würden, sondern Hochsitze um- oder zer-sägen - siehe http://Pictures-hunt.html . Wenn jemand Hochsitze ansägt, dann Nichttierrechtler (also Gewalttäter).

Und als ob Omnivore sich nicht genug lächerlich gemacht hätte, kommt dann folgendes intellektuelles Glanzstück. In seinem Bemühen, Veganismus zu diskreditieren (er findet es schließlich, wie seinen Beiträgen im Antiveg-Forum zu entnehmen ist, unverschämt, wenn jemand ihn "missioniert" - so nennt er es, wenn er wegen seiner Gewalttaten - er mißhandelt Rindern und Hühner und tötet sie bzw. bezahlt andere dafür - kritisiert wird), führt er folgenden Eintrag im veggielover-Gästebuch an:

Nehmen wir mal an, dieser Gästebucheintrag sei kein Fake. Dann handelt es sich hier also nicht, wie er - des Lesens nicht mächtig - behauptet, um eine "'militante' veganerin", sondern um eine Vegetarierin, die - wie er - Tiere mißhandelt und umbringt (oder mißhandeln und umbringen läßt), um ihre Eier und Milch zu fressen, also eine Gewalttäterin wie ihn - eben das Gegenteil von Menschen, die vegan leben.
